Château Dalem - Fronsac - 2017
This magnificent 18th-century château, overlooking the Isle Valley, stands out proudly, facing Pomerol and the Saint-Emilion limestone hillsides. The property is at the heart of an estate that was itself established in 1610. It belonged to the same family for three centuries and Michel Rullier took it over in 1955. For over 40 years, Michel Rullier modernized the vinification techniques, with the aim to improve the quality of the wines and promote them internationally.
The Fronsac appellation produces mainly red wines based on Merlot in the east of the Bordeaux wine region. Saint-Émilion and Pomerol lie to the east of the town.
Composed of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, the 2017 Dalem spent 18 months in part new and part one-year-old oak barrels. Attractively dark and coaly on the nose. Juicy and notable freshness on the palate, the tannins are lighter than most. Mouth-watering and moreish, with perhaps a hint of bitterness at the very end, The wine has a clean and precise bouquet with perfumed blackberry and freshly picked mint aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins. A clean and precise finish that is top drawer.
